Holidays in Ross-on-Wye

Get Outside - Even the most exercise-phobic visitor will be swayed by the beauty of Ross-on-Wye and the surrounding countryside. From the ancient trees of the Forest of Dean, just two miles away, to fields and orchards, not to mention the impressive River Wye, there is a wealth of ways in which people can enjoy being outdoors. Walking and cycling are two of the easiest ways to explore. If your idea of a country walk involves no more than an hour outside before you find a cosy cafe or a welcoming country pub, then follow the footpaths like the John Kyrle route, which is under three miles long. Alternatively, for walkers who like to be outside from sunrise to sunset, the long-distance Wye Valley Walk passes through Ross-on-Wye, leading to Hereford in one direction and cross-country to Goodrich Castle in the other. There are also four golf courses within ten miles of town, for those who choose to limit their walks to 18 holes.

Cyclists are exceptionally well catered for with a network of cycling routes and bridleways, and close access to mountain bike trails in the Forest of Dean and the Brecon Beacons National Park. Bike hire is available through businesses such as the Pedalabikeaway Cycle Centre in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley Bike Rental. The latter also offers guided rides to visitors who want the benefit of local knowledge to help them make the most of their experience.

The River Wye is renowned for the quality of its salmon and coarse fishing, and visitors can buy a day permit to fish in the town water for Barbell and Pike. Angling Dreams is a trove of information about what is biting as well as the place to buy permits and equipment. Canoeing is another fun way to enjoy the water. Ross-on-Wye Canoe Hire is happy to help with equipment hire and advice.

Stay Inside - It wouldn't be the British countryside if it didn't rain from time to time. Indoor activities in Ross-on-Wye and the surrounding area include the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo, Goodrich Castle and Clearwell Caves. Spend a day in Hereford where there are museums, a stunning cathedral, shops, restaurants and a cinema. Learn a new skill at Harts Barn or Humble by Nature, or climb aboard the Dean Forest Railway and journey through a medieval forest. A little rain won't dampen the pleasure of shopping at Ross' twice-weekly market where Thursday is the day for fruit, veg, fresh fish and clothing, and Saturday's stalls sell food and crafts. Ross-on-Wye has a fantastic array of places to eat, drink and shop, and a wet morning spent mooching around town is one well-spent.

St Mary's Church has been at the heart of the community for over 700 years and is a lovely spot for peaceful contemplation. If the rain eases, then wander through the churchyard to The Prospect public gardens designed specifically to help visitors and locals enjoy far-reaching views over the Wye Valley and the Welsh mountains.

Day Trips - Ross-on-Wye is perfectly placed to explore. From town, it is easy to reach places like Chepstow, Tintern Abbey, Hay-on-Wye, Gloucester, Worcester and Cheltenham. Even places like Bristol, Cardiff and Stratford-upon-Avon are only an hour's drive, so you can mix and match activities to keep everyone happy.

Ross-on-Wye is a welcoming place to visit, with locals proud to showcase the beauty and history of their town. The excellent array of places to eat, drink and stay in Ross-on-Wye have made it a firm favourite for centuries, and you will understand why when you see it yourself.
