Get Outside - Even the most exercise-phobic visitor will be swayed by the beauty of Ross-on-Wye and the surrounding countryside. From the ancient trees of the Forest of Dean, just two miles away, to fields and orchards, not to mention the impressive River Wye, there is a wealth of ways in which people can enjoy being outdoors. Walking and cycling are two of the easiest ways to explore. If your idea of a country walk involves no more than an hour outside before you find a cosy cafe or a welcoming country pub, then follow the footpaths like the John Kyrle route, which is under three miles long. Alternatively, for walkers who like to be outside from sunrise to sunset, the long-distance Wye Valley Walk passes through Ross-on-Wye, leading to Hereford in one direction and cross-country to Goodrich Castle in the other. There are also four golf courses within ten miles of town, for those who choose to limit their walks to 18 holes.
Cyclists are exceptionally well catered for with a network of cycling routes and bridleways, and close access to mountain bike trails in the Forest of Dean and the Brecon Beacons National Park.
